Log Home Building Seminars

Log Home Building Seminars sponsored by Summit Handcrafted Log Homes.

The Phoenix, Arizona seminar was a huge hit and we are currently planning our next event.

Please keep checking back for information concerning the date and location of our next Log Home Building Seminar.

These are just some of the crucial topics covered at our last seminar:

  • What is the difference between milled and handcrafted log homes?
  • How to design your perfect log home.
  • How much does it cost to build a log home?
  • Should you be your own general contractor?
  • How to find a competent and reputable builder.
  • What wood species is the best to use?
  • What log joinery techniques and fastening systems are best?
  • How to properly address the issue of settling.
  • How to finance your log home project.

Here is a list of the guest speakers we had:

Keith Austin
- Log home builder in Colorado for 25 years.

I came from Scotland in 1979 to build my first log home in the West Elk Wilderness of Colorado. It was a 2 day ski or hike to get to the property. With no electricity or chainsaws we cut the trees down with axes and then fashioned crude notches for the corners. The gaps between the logs were stuffed with newspapers, moss and mud. It is still standing and lived in. Approximately 75 log homes later I look back in horror at the quality of that cabin or lack of quality. 27 years of building log homes for several different companies has dramatically improved my skill level and knowledge of both milled and handcrafted homes. Until recently I owned a log home construction company in Colorado building anywhere from 1 – 5 homes a year as well as being an onsite technical assistant for several companies. Now I work exclusively for Summit Handcrafted managing the milled division and stacking log packages all over the country.

Cyril Courtois
of RCM Cad Design-an internationally recognized and award wining designer of log homes.

Cyril Courtois has been exclusively designing log homes, post and beam and timber frame homes for the last 15 years.
After two years of structural engineering at the University of Montreal and graduating in Architectural Design and Drafting from the University of the Fraser Valley BC, Cyril started his career designing log homes for the Japanese and Korean markets in the early 1990’s.  With over 800 log home designs completed and built in all provinces of Canada,  throughout the US and Europe and even New Zealand, Cyril has accumulated much experience designing homes from cabins to mansions over 14,000 sq ft for every imaginable climate condition using an array of innovative architectural concepts. To date Cyril has received seven Best Floor Plan contest awards from Log Home Living magazine.  His design work as also graced the pages of numerous log home and mountain living publications.

Paula Murtha
of Chase Financial

Paula has been in the mortgage lending business for 33 years.
She has been with Chase for 21 years and has specialized in Log and Timber Frame Construction lending for the last 10 years.

Andy Johnson
- Arizona log home builder and dealer.

Andy has rightfully earned the status of "A True Craftsman" after some 30 years experience in the luxury home building industry. Having grown up in Phoenix, he dreamed of someday leaving the summer heat and big city life for the lifestyle of a smaller community in the cool mountain pines in northeastern Arizona. An earlier purchase of three heavily wooded acres in Pinetop/Lakeside set the stage. His dream came quicker than expected and he had his sights set on building a log home.
After several years of intense log home research, visiting log yards and looking at completed projects, there was no question that Summit Handcrafted was by far the best choice for his dream home. Within months, he had completed plans, engineering and a building permit in hand.

Andy will talk about the process he and wife Lisa went through to bring their dream to reality and share valuable information for the first time log home builder/owner.

DREAM IT! BUILD IT! LIVE IT!
